Dear Praying Friends,
Happy Shavuot!
Today marks fifty days from Passover; it is the day on which God called Jewish men to gather in Jerusalem for worship and to praise him for the first fruits of the wheat harvest. With no temple in Jerusalem, modern orthodox Jews gather on this day wherever they live, to remember the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai, and to spend extra time in the study of Torah.
On this day in the year of Jesus' death and resurrection, God sent his Holy Spirit to indwell the first of Jesus' disciples. That day, Jewish men from many nations who had gathered in Jerusalem to worship God, heard the Gospel, each in their own language. What a miracle! That day he separated for himself a new people, who would share in Jesus' ministry and announce the Good News of the kingdom to all people groups. Many heard and entered God's kingdom.
Today we continue with the same task, via Bible translation. Our goal is to make God known among every people group in all the world so that they may know the Good News, receive Jesus as Savior by faith, and strengthen that faith through the Word of God in their own languages. We are so grateful for your partnership with us in this ministry! THANK YOU!!
We are now back home in southern Mexico, adapting again to life in another culture after five months in the United States. We praise God for the many good visits we enjoyed with you, for all of you who received us so warmly, for the thousands of miles of safe travel that God gave us, and for the generous gifts that we received for publishing the translation of God's Word in the Northern Tlaxiaco Mixtec language.
Ray has visited us three times in the ten days that we have been home. Unfortunately, these were only visits, and not work days. Ray is extremely busy now with farming and with his village job, which is serving on the land commission. The job involves measuring the land between neighbors who disagree on their land boundaries, along with a lot of travel to state and federal land offices. Please pray that Ray will still find time when we can work together recording more of our translation.
During several of our visits in the Northwest, we mentioned that translators who get close to completing their translation often need extra prayer to overcome unusual situations. We experienced one such situation today, which delayed this letter. After talking with some Mixtec folks who came to visit, I returned to our office to find my computer screen totally blank, and no power coming to the computer! Later that day, I took it to a young Christian man who works in a small computer shop downtown. He found that my power cord still worked, and then after removing and reinstalling the battery, the computer worked normally again! Praise God with us that we are again up and running! Please pray against any more surprises like this one!
Gratefully, in Jesus,
Peter & Laura Gittlen
